Depression

Overcome intense feelings. We may lose pleasure in activities that were once pleasurable. We may experience uncontrollable tearfulness, feelings of hopelessness, or have thoughts of death or suicide. We may feel stuck, unable to move in any direction in our lives. Sadness and depression are often used interchangeably; however, depression goes beyond the momentary feelings of sadness or feeling down that many of us experience. Depression can significantly impact how we think, feel, behave, and function in our day-to-day lives. We may become critical of ourselves and think we are not “good enough.” We may struggle to get out of bed or struggle to complete daily tasks.

How We Can Help

Simply Bee will help you find new ways to re-engage in your life. We will work together to create a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings while modifying them to promote mental health. We can focus on how to create a structured, yet flexible, schedule that encourages completion of necessary tasks and participation in pleasurable activities while maintaining consistency with sleep, eating, and physical activity. These strategies will help you reclaim your life.

Anxiety

Experience relief.  We may experience intrusive or worrisome thoughts, feel overwhelmed, feel irritable, experience disrupted sleep, avoid people, places or experiences that cause fear or anxiety, and experience physical sensations such as muscle tension, increased heart rate, and shortness of breath. These experiences may even lead to panic attacks. We can become distracted both mentally and physically by our fears or anxieties. Fear can be a helpful emotion in response to threat, as anxiety can be a helpful emotion in response to stress. Both emotions can encourage us to pay attention, to prepare, and to respond. For example, fear from a rabid dog running towards us may cause us to run and anxiety in anticipation of a job interview may cause us to role-play interview questions. Anxiety as a disorder, however, differs from these helpful feelings of fear and anxiety and instead involves excessive fear and anxiety that interfere with our lives.

How We Can Help

Simply Bee will work with you to provide the necessary skills to improve the way your mind and body respond to fear and anxiety. We are trained in cognitive and behavioral interventions that will help you change how you navigate your world. We can focus on thought-based skills, such as mindfulness and acceptance, to create space from your thoughts and feelings in order to behave differently and to avoid avoidance. We can also focus on body-based skills to soothe the body, such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and meditation practices. These strategies will help you get out of your mind and back into your life.

Behaviorism Explained

Behavioral Therapy focuses on learning new strategies to change unhelpful thoughts, feelings and actions.  The goal is to reinforce desirable behaviors and decrease those that are problematic or harmful.  Unlike psychoanalysis or other process-oriented therapy, behaviorism focuses on action-based skills.  Action-based skills use goals, values, acceptance and change theories to help people find a new way of living. Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, and Exposure Response Prevention are all evidence-based practices that are proven to help improve clients' quality of life by gaining a sense of control over their thoughts, feelings and actions.

Most children and tweens will face problems in life that feel overwhelming and distressing. There are times when life stressors turn into anxiety, panic, depression and difficult behaviors. Therapy is a place for young people to feel heard and learn how to problem solve their way through common and sometimes uncommon life stressors.

In therapy, children learn how to cope and communicate better. Most times, children and sometimes adults do best by learning on the spot. This includes role playing, talking out problems and behavior tracking. Activities are developed specifically to the clients’ presenting issues to help keep the person engaged. Sometimes, the entire family needs to be involved to provide adequate support and behavior change at home. Sometimes parents will join a session while other times the child will spend the entire session with the therapist.
